OPPO, Discovery launch Filmmaker Accelerator for Culture in a Shot 2026

OPPO and Discovery have launched the third edition of their global Culture in a Shot initiative, introducing a new Filmmaker Accelerator Program aimed at supporting emerging creators worldwide.

Announced in Shenzhen, China, the 2026 edition carries the theme “Meet Culture Anew, Make Your Moment,” shifting the project’s focus toward modern cultural expression shaped by digital content, short-form video, and everyday storytelling.

The initiative reflects how smartphone brands are increasingly investing in creator ecosystems and mobile filmmaking as content creation becomes a major part of device marketing and consumer engagement.

Culture in a Shot shifts focus to modern storytelling

First launched as a photography-focused cultural campaign, Culture in a Shot has evolved into a broader storytelling platform exploring how culture changes through online communities, creative expression, and digital participation.

This year’s edition moves beyond documenting traditions and instead highlights how younger generations reinterpret culture through content creation, social media, fashion, food, and video storytelling.

According to OPPO, the initiative aims to present culture as an evolving experience rather than something limited to heritage or geography.

The program also reflects a growing trend among tech brands to position smartphones as filmmaking and creative tools rather than purely communication devices.

OPPO introduces Filmmaker Accelerator Program

The biggest addition to Culture in a Shot 2026 is the new Filmmaker Accelerator Program.

Jointly developed by OPPO and Discovery, the initiative provides creators with mentorship and production support across multiple stages of filmmaking, including story development, filming techniques, post-production guidance, creative mentorship, grant support, and access to OPPO smartphone devices.

Selected works will be showcased through the OPPO x Discovery collaboration platform, giving participating creators wider global exposure. Creators joining the Super Video category of the OPPO Photography Awards 2026 may also receive invitations to join the accelerator program.

The initiative aligns with the broader rise of mobile filmmaking, where smartphone cameras and AI-powered editing tools continue to narrow the gap between traditional production equipment and mobile-first creative workflows.

Cultural storytelling expands through global campaigns

Alongside the Filmmaker Accelerator Program, OPPO and Discovery are continuing the Culture in a Shot 2026 series through regional storytelling projects and social media campaigns.

For 2026, the collaboration begins in Singapore with content focused on Peranakan cuisine and how traditional food culture continues to evolve in modern contexts.

The initiative also expands through the OPPO Culture Challenge on TikTok, encouraging users worldwide to share local cultural moments using the hashtag #OPPOCultureChallenge.

The campaign highlights themes such as local festivals, everyday traditions, food culture, community experiences, and creative reinterpretations of culture. By combining creator programs, social participation, and documentary-style storytelling, OPPO continues to strengthen its position within the growing creator economy.

Smartphone brands continue investing in creator ecosystems

The expansion of Culture in a Shot highlights how smartphone manufacturers are increasingly competing through creator-focused ecosystems instead of hardware specifications alone.

Brands including OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and HONOR have all intensified efforts around mobile photography, filmmaking, and AI-assisted content creation as younger consumers prioritize cameras and creative tools when choosing devices.

For OPPO, partnerships like Culture in a Shot also help reinforce its global brand presence across more than 90 countries while connecting smartphone technology with cultural storytelling and creator-driven content.
