MOONTON Games, the developer and publisher behind Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), is introducing a new “Title Defender” mechanism for the MLBB Mid Season Cup (MSC) 2027, giving the previous tournament’s top teams additional opportunities to return to the international stage.
The new system rewards the reigning MSC champion with a direct Main Stage berth at the following edition, while the previous runner-up will receive a Wild Card or equivalent entry.
MOONTON Games said the mechanism is designed to reward high-level performance while maintaining regional representation as MLBB Esports continues to expand into new markets.
How the MSC 2027 Title Defender system works
The new mechanism has two components: a Title Defender Direct Slot for the reigning champion and an MSC Runner-Up Wild Card Slot for the previous finalist.
The reigning MSC champion will automatically earn a Main Stage berth at MSC 2027 without going through its regional qualifier. The slot will be an additional Main Stage position for the champion’s region.
However, if the defending champion already qualifies for the Main Stage through its regional qualifier, the direct slot will instead be awarded to the next-seeded team from the same region. This ensures the additional slot remains available even if the defending champion qualifies through the standard pathway.
The previous MSC runner-up will receive a Wild Card or equivalent entry for MSC 2027 through the tournament’s existing Wild Card structure. Unlike the champion’s direct berth, this entry does not occupy a Main Stage slot.
If the runner-up qualifies for the Main Stage through its regional qualifier, the Wild Card entry will instead be passed to the next-seeded team from the same region.
Mechanism applies across all regions
The Title Defender system will apply equally to all regions covered by MSC’s global tournament framework, beginning with MSC 2027.
MOONTON Games said the rules and slot allocations for future editions will be reviewed and adjusted depending on how the competitive landscape develops.
Tiger Xu, Global Head of MLBB Esports at MOONTON Games, said the mechanism takes inspiration from established practices in traditional global sports.
“The concept of the ‘Title Defender’ mechanism mirrors established practices in elite global sport,” Xu said, citing the UEFA Champions League’s treatment of defending champions and The Masters’ invitations for past champions and top finishers.
“The MSC joins this tradition next year,” he added.
Xu said the system is intended to reward excellence while giving top-performing teams another opportunity to defend their achievements internationally.
“The new mechanism reflects our commitment to rewarding excellence and to empower the best teams in MLBB Esports with the opportunity to defend their achievements on the world stage,” Xu said.
The company added that the mechanism is also intended to strengthen MSC’s competitive quality while maintaining fairness across regions as MLBB Esports expands globally.
With MSC 2027 set to introduce the new pathway, winning the international championship will now come with an added advantage: a guaranteed route back to the next MSC Main Stage to defend the title.
