Huawei has opened submissions for the XMAGE Awards 2026, its global smartphone photography competition aimed at highlighting visual storytelling through mobile devices.
The annual contest invites both hobbyists and professionals to submit images captured using Huawei smartphones, including the flagship Huawei Mate 80 Pro. Entries are open until August 16, 2026, with winners set to be announced later this year.
More than a brand-led campaign, XMAGE reflects how smartphone photography continues to evolve as a mainstream creative platform.
XMAGE Awards expands categories and global reach
The 2026 edition introduces nine categories designed to cover a wide range of photographic styles and narratives, including So Far So Close, Colour & Shade, Good Night, Active Moments, Faces, A Heartwarming World, Experimental Lab, Storyboard, and Action.
From the global pool of entries, Huawei will select the “XMAGE 100,” representing standout works across these categories. A total of 97 winners will receive USD 1,500 each, while three grand winners will be awarded USD 10,000 each.
The awarding ceremony will be held at the Grand Palais in Paris, placing the competition within a broader art and photography context.

Huawei highlights Philippines through DOT collaboration
As part of its regional push, Huawei partnered with the Department of Tourism to showcase local destinations through smartphone photography.
Featured locations include Mayon Volcano, Buwakan ni Alejandra, Alona Beach, and Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary.
The initiative encourages creators to move beyond curated travel imagery and instead capture more grounded, everyday perspectives of the Philippines.
Mate 80 Pro positions imaging and AI as core features
Huawei is using the XMAGE Awards to highlight the imaging capabilities of the Huawei Mate 80 Pro, particularly its multi-camera system and AI-assisted tools.
The device features a 50MP Ultra Lighting main camera, a 48MP telephoto macro lens, and a 40MP ultra-wide camera, supported by AI Composition to assist with framing and shot optimization. It also emphasizes durability with IP68 and IP69 ratings, allowing users to capture content in more demanding environments.
This positioning reflects a broader trend in the smartphone industry, where flagship devices are increasingly marketed as all-in-one creative tools—combining advanced hardware, software, and AI to streamline content production.

Smartphone photography competitions reflect wider industry shift
The XMAGE Awards underscores a broader shift in the mobile industry: brands are no longer just selling camera specs—they are building ecosystems around creativity.
For Huawei, initiatives like XMAGE serve multiple purposes. They encourage user-generated content, showcase real-world camera performance, and foster a sense of community among creators. At the same time, they reinforce the brand’s positioning in mobile imaging by highlighting how its devices are used in everyday scenarios.
In this context, XMAGE functions not just as a global showcase, but also as a testing ground for how users interact with smartphone photography tools, shaping future developments in both hardware and software.
Creators interested in joining the XMAGE Awards 2026 can submit entries captured on Huawei devices through the official competition page until August 16.
As smartphone cameras continue to close the gap with dedicated gear, initiatives like XMAGE suggest that the next wave of photography may be defined less by equipment—and more by perspective.
