Riot Games has confirmed its biggest structural change yet for VALORANT Champions Tour, scrapping the league-based system in favor of a fully tournament-driven format for 2027.
The new model removes multi-week regional leagues and replaces them with cup-like events. Riot’s direction aims to shorten the cycle, increase stakes, and open the system to more teams.
End of league play: VCT Cups replace splits
Since 2023, VCT has relied on International Leagues with Stage 1 and Stage 2 splits to determine playoff teams. That structure will be eliminated in 2027.
In its place, Riot introduces VCT Cups—two per region across four global regions, totaling eight major events annually. These Cups now serve as the primary qualification pathway to Masters and Champions.
This removes long regular seasons and shifts the format toward bracket-style, double-elimination tournaments.
Open qualifiers reshape the path to pro
The biggest shift comes from accessibility. VCT 2027 introduces open qualifiers at every stage, allowing any roster to compete their way into top-tier events.
This effectively removes the previous “closed ecosystem” barrier. This means no more reliance on franchise slots as the only path, as teams from the then-Tier 2 and below can climb their way faster.
It will also remove the previous rigid VCT Ascension tournaments, and a more direct qualification routes to Masters and Champions through performance.

Partnership system remains—but with pressure
While Riot is opening the ecosystem, partnered teams are not being removed. Instead, the system shifts to a two-year partnership cycle, allowing more frequent evaluation of team performance and contribution.
Partner teams retain advantages such as base financial support, revenue share from in-game cosmetics, and later-stage seeding in qualification brackets
However, they now face direct competition from open-qualifier teams, increasing pressure to perform consistently.
Global expansion and higher stakes
VCT 2027 will feature 20+ tournaments across 16 cities, expanding beyond traditional league hubs like Los Angeles, Berlin, and Seoul.
Prize pool commitments exceed $6 million annually, alongside fully funded travel for global events. Riot also plans faster payouts and incentives for non-partnered teams, addressing sustainability concerns for unsigned rosters making deep runs.
Format breakdown: a three-phase competitive calendar
The 2027 season will follow a condensed, high-intensity structure:
- Kickoff (late 2026): Regional qualifiers and an international LAN
- Cup 1: First major qualification cycle, with top teams heading to Masters
- Cup 2: Second qualification cycle, with top teams going to the Champions
Each phase operates as a standalone competitive gauntlet, reinforcing the idea of having every match weigh more.
A shift to open, event-driven esports
With VCT 2027, Riot is betting on a tournament-first ecosystem. The new blueprint looks to prioritizes volatility, accessibility, and global reach over stability.
The result is a more unpredictable circuit where underdogs can break through and established teams can fall early. The road to Masters and even Champions will be a gauntlet where teams from the underground can go head-to-head against established elites.
And starting 2027, every match in the VCT will carry elimination weight.
