Smart Communications has earned GSMA Open Gateway certification for its SmartSafe RoamStatus API, expanding PLDT Enterprise’s portfolio of network-powered security solutions aimed at helping businesses combat online fraud.
The certification makes Smart’s Device Roaming Status API compliant with global Open Gateway and CAMARA standards, enabling enterprises to use standardized mobile network data to strengthen authentication and fraud detection.
Smart expands its Open Gateway-certified API portfolio
The new certification follows Smart’s earlier recognition for its Number Verification API, which powered the launch of SmartSafe SilentAccess in 2025—the Philippines’ first network-powered silent authentication solution.
With SmartSafe RoamStatus, businesses can determine whether a customer’s mobile device is currently roaming internationally without accessing or exposing the user’s precise location.
Instead, the API simply returns whether the device is roaming or not, giving organizations additional context during sensitive transactions.
Roaming status adds another layer of fraud protection
According to PLDT Enterprise, the API is designed to strengthen authentication by using real-time signals from Smart’s mobile network.
For example, financial institutions can identify potentially suspicious activity if a transaction originates while a customer’s device is unexpectedly roaming overseas, allowing additional verification steps before completing the request.
Potential use cases include banking transactions, digital wallet authentication, e-commerce purchases, online account logins, and identity verification processes.
PLDT Enterprise added that subscriber consent and privacy safeguards remain integral to how the information is collected and handled.
Built on GSMA Open Gateway standards
The certification comes under the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, which was developed alongside the CAMARA open-source project to standardize mobile network APIs across operators worldwide.
According to GSMA, standardized APIs allow developers and enterprises to build digital services that work consistently across multiple networks and countries while meeting common security requirements.
More than 300 mobile networks, representing over 80% of global mobile connections, now participate in the Open Gateway initiative.
More SmartSafe security APIs planned
According to PLDT Enterprise, RoamStatus is part of the broader SmartSafe portfolio, which will continue to expand with additional network-powered security services.
Upcoming APIs include SmartSafe NetIdentity for SIM and device verification, SmartSafe GeoCheck for network-based location validation, and SmartSafe KYCPlus for enhanced identity verification using network intelligence.
PLDT Enterprise says these services are intended to help organizations strengthen digital trust by combining Smart’s mobile network capabilities with globally recognized Open Gateway standards.
