Maya has completed its transition to 100% recycled plastic for all newly produced wallet cards, reaching the milestone ahead of its year-end target and marking the shift with a new special-edition card designed by Filipino artist Raxenne Maniquiz.
The recycled-plastic transition covers both Mastercard and Visa wallet cards. Maya began rolling out cards made from recycled polyvinyl chloride (rPVC) in June 2026, with the new material now standard across its wallet card portfolio.
Each newly produced card carries a “Made from 100% Recycled Plastic” mark on the back.
Bukad brings Philippine nature to Maya’s cards
To mark the transition, Maya introduced the Maya Bukad Card, a nature-inspired Visa card created in collaboration with Filipino visual artist and illustrator Raxenne Maniquiz.
The design takes its name from bukadkad, a Filipino word associated with a flower in bloom. Maniquiz fills the card with colorful illustrations of flowers, foliage, wildlife, and smaller details inspired by Philippine nature.
The collaboration brings local visual storytelling into an everyday financial product while connecting the card’s design with Maya’s environmental initiatives.
“Bukad brings this transition to life through art and design,” said Shailesh Baidwan, Group President of Maya and Co-Founder of Maya Bank. “Raxenne’s work connects the nature that inspired the design with the recycled material behind the card.”
The card works like a regular Maya wallet card
Despite the material change, the recycled-plastic cards retain the security, durability, and functionality of Maya’s existing wallet cards.
The Maya Bukad Card is powered by Visa and can be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals wherever Visa is accepted worldwide.
The special-edition card became available through the Maya app on September 9, with customers able to order it through the Cards tab.
The card is priced at ₱350.
Bukad collaboration extends beyond the card
Maya and Maniquiz are also extending the artwork into a limited-edition Bukad scarf.
The scarf will be available exclusively at PURVEYR Fair on September 12–13 at the World Trade Center Tent. Fairgoers who purchase the Maya Bukad Card for ₱350 can receive a Bukad scarf for free.
The collaboration gives the recycled-card milestone a physical creative component while supporting a Filipino artist through a consumer-facing product.
Recycled cards form part of Maya’s sustainability push
Maya said the recycled-plastic transition is part of a broader sustainability agenda covering environmental stewardship alongside financial inclusion, responsible innovation, customer trust, and employee well-being.
The company has monitored and worked to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2022.
The initiative also complements #MayaSWITCH, an employee-led program focused on energy conservation and reducing single-use plastics in the workplace.
With all newly produced wallet cards now using recycled plastic, Maya is moving the sustainability effort from a rollout initiative into the standard production of its physical cards.
