Maya has begun issuing prepaid cards made from 100% recycled Polyvinyl Chloride (rPVC), marking another step in the company’s sustainability efforts. The digital financial services provider plans to transition all newly produced Maya prepaid Mastercard and Visa cards to recycled plastic by the end of 2026.
The initiative makes recycled materials the standard across Maya’s prepaid card lineup while maintaining the same payment functionality, security, and durability customers expect.
Maya replaces virgin plastic with recycled PVC cards
Under the rollout, Maya will produce all newly manufactured prepaid cards using recycled PVC (rPVC) instead of virgin plastic.
Customers can identify the updated cards by the “Made from 100% Recycled Plastic” label printed on the back. Aside from the change in materials, the cards retain the same functionality, allowing users to make ATM withdrawals, pay for in-store and online purchases, and complete transactions at more than 150 million Mastercard and Visa merchant locations worldwide.
The transition covers both Maya-issued prepaid Mastercard and Visa cards, reflecting the company’s effort to incorporate more sustainable materials into its financial products without changing the customer experience.
Sustainability becomes part of Maya’s product strategy
The shift to recycled plastic forms part of Maya’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, integrating sustainability into products that customers use every day.
According to Maya, replacing virgin plastic with recycled materials helps reduce the environmental impact associated with producing new payment cards while keeping the customer experience unchanged.
The initiative also aligns with the observance of Philippine Environment Month, reinforcing the company’s efforts to adopt practical sustainability measures across its operations.
Card rollout complements wider environmental initiatives
The recycled card initiative forms part of Maya’s broader sustainability strategy, which also emphasizes financial inclusion, responsible innovation, customer trust and security, employee well-being, and environmental stewardship.
As part of its environmental commitments, Maya said it has monitored and worked to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2022, supporting its long-term sustainability goals.
Within the organization, the company also continues to implement #MayaSWITCH, an employee-led program that promotes energy conservation and encourages the reduction of single-use plastics across its workplaces.
Together, these initiatives reflect a broader approach to sustainability that extends beyond product design to include operational practices, workplace culture, and environmental performance.
Maya expands digital finance while pursuing responsible growth
As Maya continues growing its digital financial ecosystem, the company is pairing product expansion with sustainability initiatives that extend beyond its digital services.
The rollout of recycled plastic prepaid cards reflects a broader industry trend where financial institutions are exploring more environmentally responsible payment products while maintaining the security, compatibility, and reliability required for everyday transactions.
