Android expands Quick Share support, improves iPhone-to-Android switching

Staff WriterMay 14, 2026May 14, 20262 mins
Google is introducing new Android features aimed at making file sharing and device switching more seamless across platforms.

The latest updates expand Quick Share compatibility beyond Android ecosystems while also improving the process of moving from an iPhone to an Android device.

Quick Share gains broader cross-platform support

Google announced that Quick Share will now work with Apple’s AirDrop on supported Android devices, starting with select Google Pixel smartphones.

The company said support will expand later this year to additional Android brands including Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, vivo, Xiaomi, and HONOR.

The update addresses one of the long-standing frustrations in mobile ecosystems: sharing large files between Android and iOS devices without relying on third-party apps or cloud uploads.

For Android phones that do not support direct compatibility, Google is also introducing QR-based sharing through Quick Share.

QR code sharing expands Android-to-iPhone transfers

Starting today, Android users can generate a Quick Share QR code that allows files to transfer instantly to iOS devices through the cloud.

The move gives Android users a fallback option when nearby sharing compatibility is unavailable.

Google also confirmed plans to integrate Quick Share directly into third-party apps, with WhatsApp among the first supported platforms.

The expansion reflects Google’s broader push to make Android more interoperable across competing ecosystems and services.

Google improves iPhone-to-Android migration

Google also revealed a redesigned wireless transfer system for users switching from iPhones to Android devices.

Developed in collaboration with Apple, the updated migration process allows users to transfer more data wirelessly during device setup.

Supported data includes passwords, photos, messages, contacts, installed apps, home screen layouts, and eSIM information.

The upgraded migration system will first launch on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices later this year.

Android continues reducing ecosystem friction

The new features highlight Google’s continued effort to reduce barriers between mobile ecosystems at a time when consumers increasingly use devices and services across multiple platforms.

Cross-platform sharing and simplified device migration have become key competitive areas among smartphone makers, especially as hardware upgrades alone become less of a differentiator.

Google appears to be positioning Android as a more flexible platform by improving interoperability while making it easier for iPhone users to transition into the Android ecosystem.
