Summer Game Fest debut introduces NetEase’s AAA single-player push

Blood Message represents NetEase Games’ first entry into the AAA single-player space, developed by 24 Entertainment under the company’s ThunderFire division.

Built on Unreal Engine 5 with proprietary studio tools, the game focuses on cinematic storytelling combined with survival-driven action gameplay. The latest trailer offered a first look at combat encounters and environmental traversal across large-scale historical landscapes.

Story follows a nameless messenger through the Tang Dynasty

Set in 848 AD during the late Tang Dynasty, Blood Message follows a nameless messenger tasked with delivering a message that could determine the fate of his homeland.

The journey spans a 1,000-mile eastward route toward Chang’an, the heart of the Tang Dynasty, as the protagonist and his son navigate hostile territory, enemy sieges, and harsh terrain.

The narrative emphasizes survival under pressure, focusing on themes of loyalty, sacrifice, and identity during a period of political and cultural transition in Chinese history.

Gameplay focuses on survival combat and cinematic storytelling

The game blends stealth mechanics, melee combat, and survival elements in a linear action-adventure structure.

Players traverse environments inspired by regions across East and Central Asia, including deserts and wilderness zones such as Dunhuang. Encounters are designed around high-stakes combat scenarios where positioning, timing, and resource management play key roles.

NetEase describes the experience as a narrative-first approach that prioritizes emotional storytelling alongside grounded combat systems.

A shift toward premium single-player experiences

Blood Message signals NetEase Games’ continued expansion beyond multiplayer and live-service titles into premium single-player experiences.

The project also highlights growing investment in historically inspired narrative games from Asian studios targeting global audiences.
