SM Prime Holdings is expanding its water sustainability initiatives across SM Supermalls, focusing on long-term conservation, wastewater treatment, and resource efficiency.
The company has integrated water management systems into its mall operations, reflecting a broader push among large developers to address water security challenges in urban environments.
Sewage Treatment Plants Standardized Across 89 Malls
SM Prime began its water sustainability efforts in the late 1990s with its first sewage treatment plant at SM Southmall. Since then, STPs have been deployed across all 89 SM malls nationwide.
These systems treat wastewater for reuse, helping reduce pollution and minimize dependence on fresh water sources. Recycled water is used for:
- Flushing in restrooms
- Cleaning common areas
- Irrigating landscaped spaces
The company also integrates low-flow fixtures and water-efficient technologies to reduce overall consumption at scale.

Exploring Centralized Water Systems for Efficiency
SM Prime is now evaluating centralized sewage treatment systems that can serve multiple developments. This approach aims to improve operational efficiency while lowering costs through shared infrastructure.
By shifting toward inter-building treatment systems, the company is building capacity to manage water disruptions and strengthen resilience across its properties. This reflects a growing trend in large-scale developments to adopt integrated resource management systems.
Rainwater Treatment Facility Sets Benchmark in Baguio
A key example of SM’s water innovation is at SM City Baguio, where a rainwater treatment facility converts collected rainwater into potable water.
Since launching in 2023, the system has processed nearly 20,000 cubic meters of rainwater, supplying around 30% of the mall’s monthly clean water needs.
This output is equivalent to:
- 12.7 million 1.5-liter water bottles saved
- Nearly eight Olympic-sized swimming pools of freshwater
The facility demonstrates how commercial developments can reduce reliance on municipal water systems through localized solutions.

Sustainability Campaigns Extend Beyond Mall Operations
Beyond infrastructure, SM promotes water conservation through public awareness programs led by SM Cares. These initiatives aim to educate communities and encourage responsible water use.
The company’s efforts have earned recognition from government agencies, including awards from the Laguna Lake Development Authority and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Why Water Management Is Becoming a Priority for Developers
SM Prime’s water initiatives highlight the increasing importance of sustainable resource management in large-scale developments. As urban populations grow and water supply becomes more constrained, integrated systems like STPs and rainwater harvesting offer practical solutions to reduce environmental impact.
For developers, investing in water infrastructure supports long-term operational stability. For communities, it helps ensure more reliable access to clean water while reducing pressure on public utilities.
