TCL is positioning Super-QD Mini LED (SQD-Mini LED) as its next step in premium television technology, combining backlight control, color reproduction and panel technologies instead of relying on a single display upgrade.
The technology is built around three components: Precise Dimming, Super QLED and an Ultra Color Filter. TCL says the combination is designed to improve contrast, brightness, color consistency and motion clarity across different viewing environments.
The company recently demonstrated the technology during a media roundtable in the Philippines, where TCL compared different Mini LED implementations through side-by-side viewing and demonstrations of the underlying display hardware.
SQD-Mini LED combines three display technologies
At the foundation of TCL’s approach is Precise Dimming, which uses upgraded micro-lens structures, Micro-OD architecture and intelligent backlight algorithms to control individual lighting areas more precisely.
TCL says the technology is designed to produce brighter highlights and deeper contrast while reducing haloing, particularly around bright objects against dark backgrounds.
The second component is Super QLED, which focuses on color reproduction. TCL says it delivers a wider color gamut and higher color purity while optimizing blue-light distribution.
The third is the Ultra Color Filter, which uses color-filtering particles smaller than 5 nanometers. According to TCL, the filter helps reduce color interference and maintain cleaner colors, particularly on larger displays.
The three technologies are intended to work together rather than serve as independent upgrades.
TCL shifts the focus from specifications to viewing conditions
The company argues that premium TV performance cannot be measured by a single specification.
Consumers increasingly use large-screen TVs in different environments, from brightly lit living rooms to darker spaces used for movies and gaming. TCL says this makes brightness, contrast, color consistency and motion handling equally important.
During its Philippine media roundtable, TCL used side-by-side demonstrations to show differences between its QLED, QD Mini LED and SQD-Mini LED implementations, alongside competing displays.
The company also displayed disassembled TV units to show differences in backlight and panel construction.
The approach is intended to make display technology easier to evaluate without requiring consumers to interpret increasingly complex terminology.
TCL cites Omdia testing for SQD-Mini LED
TCL also cited independent testing by Omdia, saying its SQD-Mini LED technology received a perfect 10/10 score across brightness, color consistency, color gamut and 4K motion clarity.
According to TCL, the testing also found that the display could maintain accurate colors in smaller highlights.
These results are part of TCL’s argument that Mini LED performance depends not simply on the technology label, but on how the backlight, color system and panel are implemented together.
SQD-Mini LED targets brighter viewing environments
TCL’s argument for SQD-Mini LED also centers on where consumers actually use their televisions.
OLED remains attractive for users prioritizing deep blacks in controlled lighting environments. TCL, however, is positioning SQD-Mini LED for households that need high brightness alongside strong contrast and color performance.
That distinction becomes particularly relevant for large-screen TVs used for sports, gaming and streaming in rooms with substantial ambient light.
TCL says SQD-Mini LED is designed to maintain high brightness while limiting blooming and preserving color quality, giving users more flexibility over their viewing environment.
X11L puts the technology into a flagship TV
TCL’s SQD-Mini LED technology has already reached a flagship product in the form of the TCL X11L, which the company describes as the world’s first SQD-Mini LED television.
The X11L received a Gold Award for Innovative Display Technology at the Global Top Brands Awards during CES 2026, an award presented by International Data Group with support from IDC.
The recognition gives TCL an early showcase for its latest Mini LED architecture as the company continues expanding its premium display lineup.
TCL continues its push in the Philippine TV market
TCL also cited the 2025 Annual Cumulative Market Share Report by TRS Research, which recognized the company as the No. 1 panel TV brand in the Philippines for the third consecutive year.
The company is using that position as a foundation for its push into higher-end display technology.
Rather than treating Mini LED as a single category where specifications alone determine performance, TCL’s SQD-Mini LED strategy focuses on combining backlight precision, color reproduction and filtering into one display architecture.
For consumers, the more practical question may therefore be less about whether a TV carries a Mini LED label and more about how its underlying implementation handles brightness, contrast, color and motion in the environment where it will actually be used.
