Dune: Awakening adds full single-player mode as survival game expands to PS5, Xbox

Dune: Awakening has expanded beyond PC with its launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, bringing more than a year of updates to consoles—including a full single-player mode that lets players experience the survival game without requiring PvP.

Developer and publisher Funcom released the console version on September 22 following a head start period for Deluxe and Ultimate Edition owners.

The launch also coincides with one of the game’s largest updates, adding new story content, deeper gameplay customization, an overhauled endgame and other improvements accumulated since the game’s PC debut in June 2025.

Dune: Awakening can now be played entirely solo

The headline addition is a full single-player mode covering the entire game. Players can experience the game’s content and features without having to participate in multiplayer PvP, addressing one of the major limitations of survival games built around persistent online worlds.

PvP is now optional across the game, while the Deep Desert endgame has separate PvE and PvP instances.

The PvP version carries greater risk in exchange for higher rewards, while players who prefer a more controlled experience can remain in the PvE environment.

Players can customize how the survival game plays

The update also gives players more control over the game’s difficulty and progression systems.

Gameplay customization allows players to adjust settings such as harvesting rates, death penalties, experience gain, and other progression and survival mechanics. These options let players tailor the pace and difficulty of their Arrakis experience instead of following a single progression model.

Funcom has also reduced some of the consequences associated with failure. Players can now save their bases, recover vehicles, and deal with a reduced death penalty, while taxes have also been removed.

New story content concludes Book One

The console launch also adds several hours of new story content, bringing Book One of Dune: Awakening’s campaign to its conclusion.

The story is built around an alternate version of the Dune universe in which players investigate the disappearance of Paul Atreides while navigating Arrakis, its factions and the harsh desert environment.

The expanded endgame also places greater emphasis on missions and faction progression, including players’ rise through the ranks of either the Atreides or Harkonnen.

New maps, dungeons, weapons and dynamic encounters further expand the content available from the start of the console version.

Significant change since PC launch

The console release includes the game’s previous additions and improvements from roughly 15 months of development.

Among the larger changes are new progression systems such as Augmentations and Specializations, along with refinements to combat and melee gameplay. Funcom has also made performance optimizations specifically for consoles and adapted the user interface and controls for PlayStation and Xbox hardware.

On PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X, players can choose between Performance Mode, which targets 60fps with Dynamic 4K, and Quality Mode, which targets 30fps with Dynamic 4K. The PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X offer higher native resolution and enhanced visuals when running in Quality Mode.

The console versions also support platform-specific haptic feedback, including effects designed around encounters with the game’s massive sandworms.

Xbox Play Anywhere carries progression across devices

The Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing progression to carry between Xbox consoles, Windows PC, compatible ROG Xbox Ally devices and Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Cross-play between platforms is planned for a later update rather than being available at launch.

The game also entered Xbox Game Pass on September 22, while Game Pass members can receive a 20% discount on the Deluxe and Ultimate editions.

Dune: Awakening gets 50% Steam discount

PC players also received a launch promotion alongside the major update.

Funcom cut the Steam price of Dune: Awakening by 50% until October 8, which the company describes as its biggest discount for the game so far.

The game originally launched on PC in June 2025 and reached 189,000 concurrent players on Steam, according to Funcom. The developer also described it as its fastest-selling game to date.

With the console release, Dune: Awakening is now available across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, expanding the survival game’s audience while giving players more control over how they experience Arrakis.
