Sony has introduced two new G Master super-telephoto prime lenses for its Alpha full-frame E-mount cameras, with the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS positioned as the world’s lightest lenses in their respective categories.
The FE 400mm weighs approximately 994 grams, while the FE 600mm comes in at approximately 995 grams, excluding their tripod mounts. Sony says both achieve their respective weight records based on its September 2026 product survey.
The lighter designs are intended to make long-range photography more practical for handheld shooting, particularly for birds, wildlife and sports.
Both lenses stay below 1kg
Sony designed the two lenses with their centers of gravity closer to the camera body to improve handling despite their long focal lengths.
The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS measures approximately 108mm in maximum diameter and 242mm in length. The FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS has the same 108mm maximum diameter but extends to 263mm.
The company says the combination of weight and balance helps photographers maintain framing, track moving subjects and perform panning shots without relying as heavily on a tripod or monopod.
The lenses also feature built-in optical image stabilization for handheld shooting at super-telephoto focal lengths.
G Master optics target detail and bokeh
Both lenses use three Super ED glass elements and one ED glass element to reduce chromatic aberration and other optical aberrations.
Sony’s Nano AR Coating II is also designed to reduce ghosting and flare, including when shooting against backlighting.
An 11-blade circular aperture, together with optimized spherical aberration, is intended to produce the smooth background blur associated with Sony’s G Master lineup.
Designed for fast-moving subjects

The two lenses use two XD Linear Motors and lens-specific control algorithms for autofocus.
Sony says the system provides fast, precise and quiet AF for subjects such as birds, wildlife and athletes. Both lenses are also compatible with the Sony Alpha 9 III’s continuous shooting of up to 120 frames per second with AF/AE tracking, based on Sony’s test conditions.
The optical stabilization systems can also work with compatible camera-body stabilization features, including Active Mode and coordinated image stabilization.
For video users, the lenses support compatible camera bodies’ breathing compensation function, although Sony notes that compatibility and effectiveness vary by camera and lens settings.
400mm reaches 800mm, 600mm reaches 1200mm
The lenses can be paired with Sony’s optional teleconverters for additional reach. With the 1.4x Teleconverter (SEL14TC) or 2x Teleconverter (SEL20TC), the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS can reach up to 800mm, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS can reach up to 1,200mm.
Both models also feature four customizable focus-hold buttons positioned around the lens barrel. Other controls include a function ring, focus-range limiter, full-time DMF switch, focus-mode switch, and image-stabilization mode switch.
Sony has given both lenses a dust- and moisture-resistant design, along with a fluorine coating on the front element to help resist contaminants.
The combination is aimed at photographers who regularly shoot outdoors, particularly in situations where changing lenses or using additional support equipment may be inconvenient.
