Maya Partners with SPARK! Philippines to Boost Women Micro-Entrepreneurs

Maya has partnered with SPARK! Philippines to strengthen support for women micro-entrepreneurs, combining digital financial services with training and mentorship. The initiative forms part of Maya’s broader financial health strategy, targeting a segment that remains underserved despite its size and economic contribution.

The collaboration aims to go beyond access to financing by equipping women-led businesses with tools and knowledge to sustain long-term growth.

Bridging Gaps in Digital Financial Access

Women play a significant role in the Philippine MSME sector, with over half of small businesses owned or led by women. Despite this, adoption of digital financial tools remains uneven.

A 2023 study by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) found that only 28% of women-led MSMEs use digital financial services, compared to 44% of male-led businesses. This gap highlights barriers not just in access, but also in awareness and capability.

Through this partnership, Maya and SPARK! Philippines aim to address these challenges by combining:

  • Digital payments, savings, and credit solutions
  • Financial literacy and business training
  • Mentorship and community-based support

Combining Fintech with Grassroots Support

Maya’s ecosystem, including the Maya Business app, enables small businesses to accept digital payments, track transactions, and access credit in one platform. These tools help streamline operations and improve cash flow, particularly for small retailers and neighborhood enterprises.

At the same time, SPARK! Philippines brings expertise in advocacy and community engagement, helping deliver training and mentorship programs tailored to women entrepreneurs. This dual approach reflects a growing trend in fintech—pairing technology with education to drive meaningful adoption.

Unlocking Growth for Women Entrepreneurs

Maya’s own network underscores the opportunity. More than 90% of Maya Centers nationwide are operated by women, many of whom run sari-sari stores and small community businesses.

By strengthening access to both financial tools and support systems, the partnership aims to help women entrepreneurs:

  • Manage daily business operations more efficiently
  • Access working capital for inventory and expenses
  • Build more stable and sustainable income streams

Why This Matters for the MSME Sector

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) account for 99.5% of businesses in the Philippines, employing around 63% of the workforce and contributing roughly 40% of economic output. Strengthening women-led MSMEs has a direct impact on economic resilience and inclusive growth.

Maya’s partnership with SPARK! Philippines reflects a broader shift in the fintech space—from simply providing access to financial services to enabling real, long-term business sustainability.

As digital adoption continues to shape the Philippine economy, initiatives like this highlight the importance of combining technology, education, and community support to unlock the full potential of women entrepreneurs.
