Ant International Unveils Open-Source AMP to Power AI-Driven Mobile Payments

Ant International introduces the Agentic Mobile Protocol (AMP), an open-source framework designed to enable secure, AI-driven payments across mobile platforms, including digital wallets, banking apps, and super apps.

The launch positions AMP as a foundational layer for “agentic commerce,” where AI agents can independently initiate and complete transactions on behalf of users.

AMP targets the next phase of AI commerce

AMP is built to support the growing shift from AI-assisted interactions to fully autonomous transactions. As large language models and AI agents become more integrated into everyday apps, payment infrastructure is emerging as a key bottleneck.

Unlike traditional payment systems built around card networks, AMP is designed specifically for mobile-first environments. It allows AI agents to connect directly with wallets and merchant systems without requiring major backend changes.

Built for a mobile-first, wallet-driven ecosystem

The protocol reflects the rapid growth of digital wallets, which reached 4.4 billion users globally in 2025. Industry projections show it will exceed 6 billion by 2030.

Through integration with Alipay+, AMP can potentially connect merchants and platforms to a large network of wallet users across markets.

This approach aligns with trends in Southeast Asia and other emerging regions, where mobile wallets and super apps dominate digital payments.

Key features focus on automation, security, and scale

AMP introduces several capabilities aimed at enabling real-world AI transactions:

  • Faster integration: Reduces steps needed to link AI agents to payment systems
  • Cross-device compatibility: Supports smartphones, wearables, AR devices, and in-car systems
  • Agent-to-agent (A2A) payments: Enables ultra-small, high-frequency transactions between AI agents
  • Money-back safeguards: Adds protection for transactions initiated by AI agents

A key component is its trust framework, which verifies AI agents and manages their permissions—addressing concerns around fraud, misuse, and accountability in automated payments.

Open-source strategy aims to set industry standard

By open-sourcing AMP, Ant International is aiming to establish a common standard for AI-native payments, encouraging adoption across developers, platforms, and financial institutions.

The company is also working with global partners such as Mastercard, Visa, and Google to explore interoperability between agentic systems and existing payment rails.

AI payments move toward real-world deployment

Industry projections estimate the broader agentic commerce market will reach $28 billion by 2030, driven by the transition from experimental AI tools to production-level systems that execute tasks end-to-end.

AMP’s introduction highlights how payment infrastructure evolves alongside AI capabilities, as systems increasingly initiate, verify, and complete transactions with minimal human input.

As adoption grows, frameworks like AMP could play a central role in shaping how AI agents interact with financial systems across mobile-first economies.
