Toyota’s Self Driving Cars Now have more trunk space<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nToyota the world largest car manufacturer will once again showcase the latest iteration of their self-driving car the TRI-P4 test car. The car was designed by the Toyota Research Institute, the automaker\u2019s Silicon Valley-based division, and the major upgrade over the third version of the vehicle is the increase trunk capacity.<\/p>\n

The car, to those unfamiliar with the Level 4 self-driving cars, is not that impressive an looks like any other car. But to those familiar with the technology knows that there are banks of computers in the trunk of the vehicle running complex deep learning complex algorithms so that the car can perform the complex actions of driving on the road with other vehicles and road obstructions.<\/p>\n

The impressive innovation here is not the additional trunk space but the degree of miniaturizations that the Toyota’s engineers did to the computers making the vehicle one step closer to be a viable on-road vehicle. According to TRI, the computer box \u201chas been reimagined\u201d and is now tucked vertically against the rear seat transom, folding down to access the circuitry.<\/p>\n

But it is not only the miniaturization of the computers that is the innovation. The car can also see better with the addition 2 two cameras and improved radar detection system specially when in close distances.<\/p>\n

Toyota is currently pursuing two autonomous vehicle products in parallel: Chauffeur and Guardian. \u201cOur Chauffeur development is focused on full autonomy, where the human is essentially removed from the driving equation, either completely in all environments, or within a restricted driving domain,\u201d said Ryan Eustice, senior vice president of automated driving at TRI, in a statement. \u201cGuardian, on the other hand, is being designed to amplify human performance behind the wheel, not replace it. The introduction of the new P4 platform will help us accelerate the development of both tracks when it joins our fleet this spring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toyota is expecting to do testing of the cars in the 2nd to 3rd quarter of the year.<\/p>\n
