Maya lets eligible users upgrade accounts without uploading a physical ID

Drew MalihanSeptember 21, 20262 mins

Maya is making account upgrades easier for eligible users by introducing ID-less verification, allowing them to complete identity checks without photographing or uploading a physical government ID.

Instead, users can start with information they already know, such as their name and birthday, which Maya checks against records through -7National ID eVerify, the Philippine Statistics Authority’s identity-verification service.

Users who have their National ID number available can also use that information during the verification process.

How Maya’s ID-less verification works

The new process replaces the initial physical-ID upload with a combination of National ID verification and a video selfie.

To upgrade their account, users first enter their name and birthday, which Maya checks against National ID records through National ID eVerify. Users can also provide their National ID number if it is available.

They then take a video selfie to confirm their identity alongside the National ID verification. If additional information is required, Maya only asks for details that cannot already be verified from the information provided.

Once the identity checks are complete, eligible users can proceed with their account upgrade without uploading a photo of a physical ID.

Failed verification can still fall back to ID upload

ID-less verification does not remove the existing ID-upload option.

If Maya cannot verify a user’s information through National ID eVerify, the user can continue with the regular ID-upload process without restarting the account-upgrade application.

This gives users an alternative verification route while retaining the existing process for cases where National ID information cannot be matched or verified.

Maya still performs identity and regulatory checks

Although users may no longer need to upload a physical ID, Maya says the account-upgrade process continues to include applicable identity verification, screening, and other regulatory checks.

AI and automation handle routine verification tasks, while cases requiring additional attention can be routed to human reviewers.

For eligible users, the result is a shorter initial verification process: name, birthday, and a video selfie can be enough to get started, with a physical ID only required if the National ID verification route cannot complete the check.
