When the NCAA Philippines steps into esports, it’s more than pixels on screen. It’s a movement. On June 28, the country’s premier collegiate league fires off its Esports Kick-off Tournament, pitting all 10 member schools in the wildly popular Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. From June 28 to July 25, student gamers will test their mettle in a clash that melds strategy, teamwork, and raw reflexes.
“For us, this tournament isn’t just a competition,” says Melchor Divina, Event Chairman for Esports. “It’s a platform that recognizes college gamers’ talent, drive, and potential. Esports opens doors to leadership, collaboration, and career pathways in the digital era.”
Tournament Structure and Format
The Esports Kick-off unfolds in two phases. First, a round-robin group stage: ten teams split into two groups of five. They face every opponent in their group, each match a battle for a coveted top-three finish.
Then come the Playoffs. The six advancing squads converge at the Philippine Game Dev Expo (July 25–27). The format? A modified gauntlet double-elimination bracket, where underdogs can claw back through the lower bracket. Lose twice, and the dream ends. Win it all, and you’re NCAA Esports royalty.
Every match counts. Every draft matters. And every clutch play could launch these campus teams into collegiate legend.
The Road to NCAA Season 101
The Kick-off is just the beginning. Later this year, NCAA Season 101 will integrate a full Esports Competition in December 2025. This time, the lineup broadens to two powerhouse titles: Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Valorant.
Adding Valorant signals a major shift for NCAA. The Association has traditionally celebrated gridiron tackles and basketball threes—but now, it embraces esports’ global surge. Student gamers will find new avenues for skill development, sportsmanship, and even scholarship opportunities.
Building Community and Career Pathways
College esports isn’t a side show. It’s a proving ground. By partnering with the Collegiate Center for Esports, the NCAA delivers more than trophies. It delivers mentorship, networking, and real-world exposure. Broadcasts, shoutcasters, and social media coverage elevate these tournaments to semi-pro production values. Talent scouts from professional outfits will be watching.
Student competitors hone discipline. They master time management between classes and scrims. They learn to communicate under pressure. These are transferable skills—whether they pursue careers on the pro scene or in tech, marketing, and event management.

Each of the NCAA’s 10 institutions brings unique flavor to the arena. Rivalries that echo on the hardwood now play out in the jungle, mid, and gold lane. Onsite booths showcase game dev demos, digital art, and merch from local studios. A programming workshop runs alongside the finals, offering aspiring devs a hands-on glimpse at game creation. College esports dovetails with broader tech culture, underscoring the industry’s multifaceted growth.
